What to Bring to the Acropolis Athens, and What the Rules Leave at the Gate
The short answer. Bring shoes with grip, a hat, sun protection, a passport or ID for any free ticket, and your ticket on your phone. Leave behind large luggage, food and pets. Small backpacks and handbags are allowed. Water is the one grey area: the site's rules ban drinking on the rock, and operators still tell you to carry some.
Most of what goes wrong at the Acropolis gate is packed the night before. People bring a suitcase they cannot check, sandals that slide on marble, or a child with no passport to prove their age. The rules are short, and this post puts the Ministry's rules and the operators' advice side by side. The rules at the gate
The Ministry of Culture sets the operating rules for the site. On the Acropolis you may not:
- eat or drink;
- smoke or leave litter;
- bring a pet, unless it is a dog accompanying a person with a disability;
- touch the monuments, or leave the marked routes.
The Ministry also recommends footwear suitable for walking, and security staff can remove visitors who ignore the rules. The practical side of the visit is on visiting the Acropolis.
Rock or museum: what goes where
The Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum run different checks. This table puts them side by side, so one bag works for both.

What to wear
Wear shoes with grip. The paths on the rock are marble, worn smooth, and one operator warns that they are slippery. Another advises against flip-flops, slippers and sandals on its walk. Trainers or walking shoes are right.
Dress for sun on an exposed hill. There is little shade on the plateau, and HNMS normals put the average high at 30 °C in June and 33 °C in July and August. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are on every operator's list. In winter bring a layer and a rain jacket, because HNMS describes mid-October to March as the cold, rainy season. What to have in your hand
- Your ticket. A timed ticket on your phone, or your tour voucher. One walking-tour operator accepts a paper or an electronic voucher.
- A passport or ID. Children under 18 from outside the EU and EU citizens under 25 enter free, but only against proof of age. One operator accepts a photo of it on your phone.
- A charged phone. Audio tours run on it, and the ticket-only listing says to bring your own headphones.
- Some cash. One operator can sell you full-price tickets at the meeting point if you arrange it days ahead, and it takes cash only for that.
What to leave behind
Leave the suitcase at your hotel or on the ship. The Ministry's cloakroom sits north of the Main Entrance, outside the site, and it does not accept large luggage for security reasons. One walking-tour operator also asks you to leave large backpacks and oversized purses behind.
Leave the stroller too, if you are on a shared walk. Those walks say strollers are not allowed on the Acropolis, and the walk from Porinou 5 lets you leave one at its office. For families, the Acropolis with kids covers the lift and the other options.
If you are going on to the museum
Plan your bag for the museum as well as the rock. There is a security point with an X-ray scanner at the museum's entrance, and the museum asks visitors to leave backpacks and bulky items at its cloakroom on the ground floor. Food and drink stay out of the galleries.
You can photograph almost everything except the Archaic Acropolis Gallery, with no flash and no tripod anywhere. Museum tickets are single-use and valid only for their date. The Acropolis Museum page has the hours and prices.
Where to leave what
There are three places to leave things near the rock, and each takes something different.
- The Ministry's cloakroom. It sits north of the Main Entrance, outside the site, and checks bags and strollers. It does not take large luggage.
- The museum's cloakrooms. There are two on the ground floor, one for independent visitors and one for groups. They take backpacks and bulky items, but the museum is not responsible for fragile or valuable objects left there.
- Your tour's office. The walk from Porinou 5 lets you leave a stroller at its office while you climb.
Anything that fits none of those, such as a suitcase on the day you leave Athens, belongs at your hotel. Ask the desk the night before whether it will hold your bags after check-out.
The night-before checklist
- Ticket or voucher saved offline, with the entrance and slot noted.
- Passports or ID for anyone claiming a free or reduced ticket.
- Walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- A water bottle in a small bag, and nothing larger than a daypack.
- Phone charged, with headphones if you booked an audio tour.
If you are meeting a tour, check where it starts on the map of entrances and meeting points, and arrive 15 minutes early.
