Acropolis Athens Map: Entrances and Meeting Points
The Acropolis has one way up, from the west, but two public gates, and the tours meet on the south side, at your hotel or at the cruise port. Booked an acropolis walking tour athens? Find its street and its gate before the day.
The two entrances, and the gate for the lift
The rock can be climbed only from the west, so every visitor ends up on the same path through the Propylaea. Where you show your ticket is another matter.
Main Entrance, west slope
On the west slope, where the climb to the Propylaea begins. The cloakroom is just north of it, outside the site, and the toilets are either side of it. Visitors with disabilities must validate their tickets here.
South entrance, Dionysiou Areopagitou
On the pedestrian street under the south slope, a few minutes from Acropolis metro station. You walk up through the south slope, past the Theatre of Dionysus, to join the path to the Propylaea. The ticket-only listing sends you here.
The lift entrance
A separate gate north of the Main Entrance, at the start of a 350 m accessible route to the Acropolis lift. Phone 2131317762 before you go.
The Acropolis Museum is a separate building about 300 m south-east of the Parthenon, at Dionysiou Areopagitou 15. The Ancient Agora's gate for now is at Thiseio Square, because its main entrance at Adrianou 24 is being rebuilt.
Meeting points, street by street
Most shared walks and private guides meet within a few minutes of Acropolis metro station, in the streets of Makrygianni south of the rock. Six addresses cover almost all of them.
Porinou 5
The Athens Walks office, about two minutes' walk from Acropolis metro station. Its shared walks, the museum-and-lunch day and the Agora walk start here. Arrive 15 minutes early; the office lets you leave a stroller.
Mitseon 2
The Athenian Tours office, also close to Acropolis metro station. Both of its walks ask you to arrive 20 minutes before the start.
Makrigianni 7
Near the Acropolis Museum. The private archaeologists meet here, and the guide holds a sign with the lead traveler's name.
Dionysiou Areopagitou 3
At the café tables where the pedestrian walkway begins, about three minutes from the metro.
Athanasiou Diakou 16
The Athens by Bike shop, 60 m from Acropolis metro station, for both bike rides.
The metro exit itself
Some tours meet at Acropolis metro station itself: the all-included small group by the “Akropoli” sign at the Makrygianni exit, and the private family guide at the entrance on Makrygianni Street.
Found a meeting point a short walk from your hotel?
Book the tour that starts there. Each card says whether the ticket is in the fare and who explains the site.
Rovertou Galli, Hadrian's Arch and pickups
A few tours start farther out. On Rovertou Galli, below the Acropolis, the private guided tour with tickets meets outside the Dionysos Zonar's café at number 43, and the small-group options of the full-day and four-hour car tours meet outside the Herodion Hotel at number 4. The private mythology walk meets at Hadrian's Arch, Vasilisis Amalias 50, east of the rock, and stops at the Temple of Olympian Zeus before the climb.
The driver tours collect you. Three pick up from your hotel, one anywhere in the Athens region including Piraeus and the airport, and the cruise-day tour meets you at your terminal, A, B or C, at Piraeus, where staff hold signs.
Where tours end
- Inside the site. The private archaeologist tours from Makrigianni 7 and Hadrian's Arch can end on the Acropolis, so you can stay on until closing.
- At the museum. Walks that add the Acropolis Museum finish in its galleries, at Dionysiou Areopagitou 15.
- In the Agora. The Agora walks finish on the Agora side, closer to Thiseio and Monastiraki than to Acropolis metro station.
- At your door. Driver tours return you to your hotel or port.
From Acropolis and Monastiraki metro stations
The Ministry of Culture gives three ways to walk up.
- Acropolis station, then Dionysiou Areopagitou along the pedestrian street to the Main Entrance on the west slope.
- Acropolis station, then through the South Slope by Dionysiou Areopagitou and Thrasyllou Street, to the South entrance.
- Monastiraki station, then through the Ancient Agora or Plaka, uphill to the Main Entrance.
Acropolis station, Akropoli in Greek, is on metro Line 2, Anthoupoli–Elliniko. Buses and trolleys stop at Makrigianni, beside the museum.
From Piraeus port
Cruise passengers have three ways in, and the operators give the times. By road it takes about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic: one private guide puts Piraeus at about 30 minutes from Rovertou Galli 43, and the bike shop about 40 minutes by taxi. One operator advises the metro from the port. The cruise-day tour collects you at your terminal, guarantees your return to the ship, and refunds in full if the ship cannot dock.
The accessible entrance
Accessible toilets are at the Information Centre, 18–20 Dionysiou Areopagitou, 50 m east of the South Slope entrance. More on the lift and its routes is on Acropolis accessibility.
The Acropolis on the map
The rock sits between Plaka to the north, Makrygianni and the museum to the south-east, and the Agora and the Areopagus to the north-west. Press the button to load the map; nothing is sent to Google until you do.
The map loads from Google only when you press it.
