Your own archaeologist on the plateau

A shared walk runs to a timetable and a group of twenty. This one runs to you. Your guide is a state-licensed archaeologist, so you can stop at the Propylaea for as long as the questions last. You can skip the mythology or ask for more of it, and you can sit in the shade when the children need a break.

The route follows the rock the way it was built to be approached. You meet on Makrigianni, walk up past the Theatre of Dionysus, and go through the Propylaea to the Temple of Athena Nike, the Parthenon and the Erechtheion. On the museum option you then come down to the Acropolis Museum, where the sculpture that once stood on those buildings is shown indoors.

Ninety minutes, the museum, the Agora or a car: choosing your version

You book one of four versions. The shortest is 90 minutes on the Acropolis alone, and it ends inside the site so you can stay on for photographs. The museum version and the Agora version each run three hours. The museum one may finish inside the museum, while the Agora one ends at the Agora after a walk over rough cobbles. The fourth is five hours by vehicle, with transfers from your cruise ship or a central Athens address and more of the city on the way.

The tickets you still buy: €30 and €20

Admission is not in the fare. The Acropolis ticket costs €30, the Acropolis Museum €20 and the Ancient Agora €20. After you book, the operator messages you to ask whether you want them to buy timed tickets, so your guide holds them on the day. Answer that message. If you do not reply, the operator assumes you have bought tickets for the right slot yourself.

From Makrigianni 7 to the Parthenon, and on to the museum

1. Makrigianni 7. Your guide waits with a sign carrying the lead traveler's name.
2. Theatre of Dionysus. The walk up the south slope begins here.
3. Propylaea and Temple of Athena Nike. Through the gate onto the rock.
4. Parthenon and Erechtheion, about 80 minutes on the rock in all. The plateau at your own pace, with an archaeologist beside you.
5. Acropolis Museum, about 80 minutes. On the museum version, the sculpture from the buildings you just saw.
6. Or the Ancient Agora. On the Agora version, down the hill to the old marketplace, where the tour ends.

What the fare covers

Makrigianni 7, below the museum: where you meet

You meet at Makrigianni 7, 117 42 Athens, close to the Acropolis Museum and a few minutes from Acropolis metro station. Your guide holds a sign with the lead traveler's name, so put the name you will answer to on the booking.

On the vehicle version you are collected instead, from your cruise ship or a central Athens address. Where you finish depends on the version you chose: inside the Acropolis, inside the museum, or at the Ancient Agora. Every start point is on the Acropolis map of entrances and meeting points.

Know before you go

• Answer the ticket message. Silence means the operator assumes you already hold tickets for the right slot.
• Budget for admission. €30 for the Acropolis, €20 for the museum, €20 for the Agora.
• The Agora version ends at the Agora. The walk there is over rough cobbles, so skip it with limited mobility.
• The shortest version ends inside the site. Stay on for photographs, then leave by the gate when you are done.
• Not wheelchair accessible. Strollers and service animals are accepted.
• It needs good weather. If it is canceled for poor weather, you are offered a different date or a full refund.
